The central tenet of all TRB-related activities is research; the creation of new knowledge with specific applications relevant in many contexts. AP055 had an official subcommittee in years past and now proceeds in an informal basis. Full committee meetings provide one forum for brainstorming research needs but the real work continues after as small groups draft and submit ideas for synthesis or full research studies.

You can also sign-up for, and tailor, the TRB Weekly newsletter.
A “friend of a committee” is someone who can attend committee meetings and participate in the same activities as committee members. In addition, friends who actively contribute to AP055 activities may be considered for membership.
AP055 hosts a few conference sessions and various committee meetings each January during the TRB Annual Meeting. Anyone is welcome to actively participate in our work. Find details about our sessions and meetings in the interactive program by searching "AP055". Please reach out to a committee chair to share feedback or ideas.

AP055 liaises with several other committees and joint subcommittees, including:
Researchers write and submit research papers each summer for presentation at the following January's TRB Annual Meeting and/or publication in the Transportation Research Record. AP055 members and friends provide several thoughtful reviews and advance the best papers. We assign individual reviewers 1 or 2 papers based on their expressed interest and expertise. A thoughtful review requires a few hours.

AP055 leads a long-running conference and supports planning several other conferences. TRB convenes the conferences and a planning committee builds the program. Conference planning committee membership is typically fairly open, consisting of committee members/friends, local host partners (i.e., transit association, state DOT, transit operators, etc.), federal partners, and other interested persons. RIBTC has a long history of convening about every 2 years:
TRB will be co-sponsoring the National Rural Transit Assistant Program's (National RTAP's) next conference in December 2025. AP055's role will be to support RTAP by leading breakout session content solicitation and moderation.

The Subcommittee on Paratransit is a joint committee with members from AP055, AP020 Innovative Public Transportation Services and Technologies, and AME50 Accessible Transportation and Mobility. Formed in 2020, the subcommittee strives to continue the work of the former full Paratransit Committee by identifying and disseminating research on current and emerging planning, implementation, and operating issues for paratransit modes. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a central focus and topics often include operational practices and strategies to assist transit agencies to provide effective and efficient paratransit service. Anyone is welcome to participate.

Formed in 2020, the Subcommittee on Intercity Bus brings together state DOT program representatives dealing with the Section 5311(f) rural intercity bus program, industry representatives, and other stakeholders or researchers to address the economic, funding and service issues facing the national intercity network and define research needs to support the continuation and development of this network. Intercity bus service, both unsubsidized and FTA-funded, is unique from local rural pubic transit and demand-response services in terms of service, economics, funding and demand. The subcommittee seeks to attract participation from many states, bus firms, industry associations, FTA, other TRB committees dealing with intercity and long-distance travel. Anyone is welcome to participate.
